چکیده
38% as shown in Table 1 in my article.2 I apologize for this error. Their findings,1 coupled with the other reports of the mortality of untreated PE,3–6 would indicate that the mortality of untreated PE is approximately 30%. Given the fact that the mortality of PE in patients treated with heparin and warfarin is 5%,7,8 it is unlikely that there will be additional randomized clinical trials comparing heparin to placebo in patients with PE, or additional reports of the mortality of untreated PE.

Stair climbing test as a predictor of cardiopulmonary complications after pulmonary lobectomy in the elderly.
BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to assess the role of a symptom-limited stair climbing test in predicting postoperative cardiopulmonary complications in elderly candidates for lung resection. METHODS A consecutive series of 109 patients more than 70 years of age who underwent pulmonary lobectomy for lung carcinoma from January 2000 through May 2003 formed the prospective database o...
متن کاملComparison between stair-climbing test and six-minute walk test after lung resection using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery lobectomy
[Purpose] Currently, the six-minute walk distance (6MWD) is used to evaluate exercise capacity in people following lung resection for non-small cell lung cancer. However, it is unclear whether the 6MWD can detect changes in cardiorespiratory fitness induced by exercise training or lung resection. Conversely, the stair-climbing test is used frequently for the preoperative evaluation of lung rese...
متن کاملThe Stair-climbing Test. The Quest for Much-needed Simplicity.
For several decades, exercise capacity has been an essential part of the evaluation of functionality in patients with lung cancer. Exercise tests are used in patients referred for lung resection surgery to more accurately select those capable of supplying tissues with enough oxygen to meet increased demand if a postoperative complication should occur. According, an exercise test is recommended ...
متن کاملPulmonary function tests in the preoperative evaluation of lung cancer surgery candidates. A review of guidelines
Before planned surgical treatment of lung cancer, the patient's respiratory system function should be evaluated. According to the current guidelines, the assessment should start with measurements of FEV1 (forced expiratory volume in 1 second) and DLco (carbon monoxide lung diffusion capacity). Pneumonectomy is possible when FEV1 and DLco are > 80% of the predicted value (p.v.). If either of the...
متن کاملStair-Climbing Test Predicts Postoperative Cardiopulmonary Complications and Hospital Stay in Patients with Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
BACKGROUND There is currently no reliable method to predict major postoperative cardiopulmonary complications for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In this study, we hypothesized that exercise oxygen desaturation (EOD) and heart rate change results in a stair-climbing test (SCT) would predict postoperative cardiopulmonary complications for patients with NSCLC. MATERIAL AND METHO...
